Nocturnal Sleep Eating Disorder: What Is It and What Causes It?

Sleep disorders are relatively rare, but their effects are varied. And, while they are clearly unpleasant for sufferers, they are fascinating from a psychological perspective. Sleepwalking is perhaps the best known of the common sleeping disorders and it is believed to affect between 1% and 15% of the general population.

While most of us have heard of sleepwalking, and probably even know someone who has experienced it at some point in their lives, there is much less awareness of the more complex and, thankfully, rarer forms of the condition. Among these is nocturnal sleeping disorder.

What Is Nocturnal Sleep Eating Disorder?

Nocturnal sleep eating disorder, also known as sleep eating, and somnambulistic eating, consists of two components; first is somnambulism, more commonly known as sleepwalking. The second is the eating disorder component where the sufferer consumes excessive amounts of food while they are in this state.

One of the more fascinating aspects of this condition is that, while the basic features of the somnambulistic episodes remain the same, there are often subtle differences in certain aspects of its presentation and generally no two cases will present in precisely the same way. In most cases the episodes occur within two or three hours of the patient falling asleep and tend to resolve relatively quickly although the exact timescales often vary.

In many cases the combinations of food that sufferers eat during an episode are bizarre and completely unlike the kinds of food that they would eat normally. What separates nocturnal sleeping disorder from other similar disorders is that sufferers of nocturnal sleeping disorder are more likely to create mess and to potentially harm themselves, making it one of the more scary sleep disorders. This is in contrast to the much more common night eating syndrome, in which the sufferers are able to prepare food in the same manner they would while fully conscious.

As with other sleeping disorders the treatments for nocturnal eating disorder revolve around psychological therapies and counselling. Doctors have been working hard to devise a treatment strategy which can be used on all patients but so far have been unsuccessful. In addition to the usual cognitive behavioural therapies and other psychological treatments, there are a growing number of medications which have shown promise.

What Causes It?

Interestingly enough, doctors have noted a higher than usual incidence (27%) of sufferers of nocturnal sleep eating disorder suffering from co-morbid restless leg syndrome. Medications such as L-Dopa, clonazepam, and some opioids have been shown to be effective at treating the condition in many people. This suggests that there may be some kind of overlap in the physiological causes of both conditions although doctors have still been unable to definitively establish the root causes.

The first case of nocturnal sleep eating disorder was recorded in the mid 1950’s, however there were only half a dozen cases recorded in the medical literature over the course of the proceeding 36 years. As awareness of the condition has grown there have been more diagnoses and it is believed that, owing to the similarity of nocturnal sleep eating disorder to a number of other sleep disorders, it has meant that incidents of the condition have been under-reported.

French Press, The Stylish Way to do Coffee

If you have been following this page or my social media accounts, then you will know very well that two of my biggest loves in life are coffee, and being stylish. With this sin mind then, it makes absolute sense that whenever I do have my daily coffee, I like to do so in style. Over the last couple of years I have really become an aficionado when it comes to coffee and the instant variety that I survived on for so long, simply doesn’t do it for me anymore.

I wanted to take to you today then, about one of my favorite gadgets in the home, and the only way to really do coffee in style, the French press.

What is a French Press?

If you have never seen a coffee press before, it is basically a jug which has a plunging device with a filter attached. Natural the presses will come in may different shapes and sizes as well as with different colors and different materials used. These presses are designed so that you can make the perfect cup of coffee every time and thanks to the materials which they are made with, they can keep your coffee warmer for longer, perfect for those who love to go back for more.

How to Use The Press?

You don’t need any technical knowledge to use these presses, simply put some coarsely ground coffee into the jug, add some boiling water, allow the coffee to brew until you are ready, and then plunge the filter through the coffee. Once you have plunged the filter, simply serve up the coffee and set to one side until you are ready for more.

Why Go To The Effort?

When compared to coffee machines where you simply hit a button, or indeed instant coffee, the French press does require a little more work from you. The benefits of this way of making coffee however, are far better than its counterparts and this is why it is worth putting that little bit extra effort in. Firstly the flavor is far superior through this way of making coffee than with any other, secondly it looks great and finally, the way in which the press works, you will never get any grit in your coffee after you’ve made it.  Another benefit that I love is also that you don’t have to replace the filter every time like with a percolator!

How to Stay Stylish?

If you want to stay stylish whilst making and drinking your coffee, make sure that you have a good search around for the right French press for you. There is a whole range of presses out there to choose from including brushed or polished steel presses, colorful glass presses and even the Jetsons-esque Aeropress. You can easily find something to match your individual style and the design of your kitchen when looking for a press so that you can stay stylish whilst enjoying your favorite drink.

The Most Interesting Cities To Visit In The World

The world is full of many amazing cities to visit and you could endlessly travel in search of the perfect one. There is nothing wrong with searching for the right one, but you would really need to visit all of them to truly decide. To do this, you need a starting point and I made this guide to show you some very interesting places that you could potentially visit. I hope you enjoy reading about some places that I find to be fascinating./

Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland is world famous as the capital of Iceland and it is naturally one of the most interesting cities on earth. There is a budding art scene there, a whole host of natural wonders at every turn and a cool bar scene to explore too. The city itself is also very beautiful with the traditional houses that have been painted in all sorts of colours, like blues, greens, red and yellows. If you are visiting Reykjavik you definitely need to experience something that every Icelander loves to do and that is enjoying time swimming in the hot springs that are dotted throughout the city.

Rishikesh, India

This fascinating place was made famous by the Beatles after they took a trip to India in order to discover spirituality. Many people have since made the pilgrimage here and followed in the Beatles’ footsteps and the tourism in the area has now become totally receptive and welcome to visitors. You can enjoy yoga, meditation and much more in the area and it is truly a magical place. There are a number of cheap hotel options in Rishikesh, as well as more expensive retreat style options, so there be something for everyone here, from the backpacker to the middle aged corporate looking for inner peace!

Rocky Point, Mexico

Rocky Point is also known as Puerto Peñasco. This gorgeous area is closest to the states, only about an hour away from the border. What makes it so interesting is that even though it’s so close to the US, it’s a less popular vacation spot than Cancun or Cabo, which has preserved it. It holds on to a lot of authentic culture, and is complemented by gorgeous, tranquil beaches that are hardly ever overcrowded. This is a must-visit vacation spot!

Berlin, Germany

Germany’s capital is one of the most interesting and hip cities that you could ever visit. There are a large number of people from many different countries living here, all are attracted by the art and culture scene that is unrivalled in Germany. There is also abundant nightlife that makes it the party capital of the world. The bars stay open late and the clubs even later (many don’t actually close at point on the weekends). The food is great too with the large migrant Turkish and Vietnamese peoples living there, so you can be sure to have something great to eat too. Berlin is truly a city like no other that everyone should visit!

Seoul, South Korea

South Korea is home to one of the coolest cities going around: Seoul. Soul has hip cafes and Korean craft beer, something you probably wouldn’t expect. There are also many hidden bars and restaurants, which makes for an interesting adventure trying to find them! Korean food is naturally amazing and the Koreans love to experiment and take things to the extreme, whether it’s very spicy or super sweet, there is always something interesting to eat. Like Japan, Korea also has a number of cultural icons and movements, in particular in Gangnam (the home of the ultra cool in Seoul). Seoul is definitely one of my favourite cities in Asia that I would love to go back to as soon as I get the chance.

Sarajevo, Bosnia

Sarajevo doesn’t have the most beautiful buildings and isn’t the most pretty city that you will ever visit, but it certainly has soul and is one of the most unique places that you could ever visit. It will always be remembered as the place where the First World War started, after Franz Ferdinand (the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire) was assassinated in the middle of the city. The city’s history also continued in an interesting fashion as the host of the 1984 Winter Olympics and furthermore experienced a long civil war during the 90s. The city under siege from all sides for 3 years. The city has a very interesting culture and you can learn more about it in the various museums and sites of interest. I would highly recommend heading to Sarajevo if you get the chance.

Melbourne, Australia

There is nothing better than a multicultural city and Melbourne is one of my favourite, it has a beautiful mix of old and new architecture that makes it one of the most unique cities on the earth. It really is like the New York of Australia and I really enjoy the cafe culture there and all are in fierce competition to be the best, which can only mean great coffee for everyone. The food is also amazing, with a true melting pot of cuisines, such as Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Italian, Greek and so much more. The large migrant population is to thank for this and makes Melbourne the city that it is today.

Yurts Aren’t Only in Mongolia – Glamping in the States

Have you ever thought about staying in a yurt for your holiday? Well, in the past you’d probably have head all the way to Mongolia to get a unique yurt experience. Now it’s much easier, in fact yurt camping in the U.S.A. is all the rage these days. Just have a look at the Glamping Hub to see what’s on offer.

If you’re searching for something special to do this summer then living in a yurt will give you the most perfect glamping adventure. You might be used to camping but yurts will really raise the bar for camping enthusiasts.

If you think of experiencing nature in luxury, your mind will instantly think of a cabin or cottage. A yurt will give you a rustic experience, but not compromise on comfort or luxury.

Here’s why you should try this unique experience for your next summer holiday:

It’s affordable

More often than not, staying in a yurt is a lot cheaper than a cabin or hotel. You can find deals out there right now for as little as $100 per night – that’s not per person but for as many as 6 people! That will get you everything you need to have a great experience in a comfortable yurt.

Connect with nature

Sleeping outside under the stars is a nice experience, but there are certainly times when you need to have a roof over your head. Yurts offer the best way to combine open air camping and cabin living. You’ll have a solid roof to keep you dry, but you’ll still be able to hear the wildlife outside. Some will even have a skylight to let the sun shine in and see the stars at night.

Experience a glamping holiday

Glamping is camping but with an upgrade. Yurts will have beautiful hardwood floors, large beds, fridges, plenty of space and also a BBA area. You get all the comforts of home and still get the real experience of living in nature.

Brings everyone together

If you stay in a hotel or a cabin your group will be separated most of the time. In a large yurt a family can stay together, as one, very comfortably. When you all live in the same room you can play games, chat and have quality time together – this is something often lacking in our lives today. With your own BBQ area it’s also very easy for you to sit around creating special memories.

Explore with ease

When you’re in a new place, surrounded by nature you will always want to head out and explore. The yurt resorts will have lots of activities for you to try out and great recommendations for family hikes. It’s a great way for the family to bond before heading back to the campfire to chat about the adventure you all had.

Thailand Is Still One Of The Best Places For A Motorcycle Tour

If you’re looking for one of the most exotic locations in the world where you can enjoy the freedom of a motorcycle, the Thailand should certainly be near the top of any list. Surprisingly there are a lot of bikers out there who are not aware of how amazing motorcycle tours in Thailand truly are. Not only do you get to take in the beauty of this amazing country, but there are so many other things which make it a heaven for motorcyclists.

The quality of the roads are amazing

In Thailand the roads are fantastic for bikers, not only will you find the highways in pristine condition but even in rural areas the roads are in great condition. Of course riding on nice smooth roads is fun, but the experiences come from riding on the less travelled roads. These are roads such as countryside roads, paths through national parks and many other roads that reveal some of the Thailand’s hidden beauty. The one thing I like about the smaller roads is that it’s very rare to see large vehicles on them, such as lorries, this makes things even better and much safer.

Stunning Scenery

So the roads are motorcycle friendly which is great news, the other great news is that it allows you to be more comfortable when taking in the stunning scenery that Thailand has to offer. If you love natural beauty, mountains and jungle then head to the north of Thailand. Places such as Chiang Rai and Nan are blesses with some of the best scenery in the whole of South East Asia. If you listen to the locals or have a good guide, you’ll be able to pass by waterfalls, rivers and ride along beautiful winding roads. Stop off as much as you can to take pictures and just appreciate what is there in front of you – that’s the beauty of having a bike, the freedom to stop whenever you like.

The accommodation in Thailand is absolutely fantastic no matter which part of the country you are in. There is something to fit every budget and every type of traveller. The best part is that the rates are superb, especially the more rural that you go. If you want you can have a bit of fun and not book anything in advance and just ride until you find something that suits you – again that feeling of freedom just adds to any biking trip!

5 Every Girl Needs In Your Bag

Every woman needs to have the essentials in her bag because you never know what situation or emergency might happen!

Here are my 10 things that you can’t leave the home without them being in your purse.

Safety Pins

The lifesaver that every girl needs! If a button decides to pop off or a seam decides to be a nightmare then all you need is a safety pin. If you have small ones they can also act as a clasp for a necklace if it decides to break.

Band Aids

Cuts and small little scrapes can be treated temporarily with these, but all the ladies out there know that the best use is to save your heels form those painful new shoes you’re trying to break in. If you’ve chipped your nail polish from a nail you can always cover it up with a band aid.

Blotting Papers

The absorbent sheets are one of the most elegant ways that I can find to wipe off any excess oil or sweat that may break out on your cheeks, forehead or upper lick area.

A Healthy Snack

In this crazy and busy lifestyle we always find ourselves working through lunch or skipping on meals. But it is essential that we eat. So buy a box of healthy snack bars during your next visit to the grocery store. Each time you leave the house make sure you’ve thrown one or two in to your purse.

Battery pack for your cellphone

You need to have a cellphone battery pack just incase your phone dies. Buy a good one that will charge your phone at least a couple of times, you can pick one up for around $20 these days and that’s a small price to pay. Another option is to have a battery case, the case will cost you more than a battery pack but you won’t be having to deal with loose wires. During that long train journey to work, you definitely want to have enough battery so you can chat to friends, catch up on the latest world news or close your eyes and listen to your favourite tunes.

What do you never forget to put in your purse? I would love to hear what are the main things that you can’t leave the house without. Put comments below this post.

Why I love my afro

My afro is amazing and has a mind of it’s own. She’s beautiful, wild and can be temperamental sometimes!

We haven’t always had the best relationship, but our love has grown since I had the big chop. I seem to learn more about her everyday and here’s what I love about her right now:

She’s not that difficult

I can still remember my mother telling me that having an afro would be a nightmare to manage. Well that’s because back then she was the one looking after my hair, now I am the sole keeper of my mane. It’s not as difficult to look after as you might think.

She knows her products

She certainly has a great taste in products and only ever wants the most gentle of products. She reacts beautifully to olive oil and will mold into any shape when shea butter is applied.

She takes different forms

It’s no big secret that natural hair will shrink, sometimes it can shrink upto 10 times its length – my mane is definitely no exception to that rule. I love watching my afro transform from it’s natural form after 7 days to instantly shriveling on wash day. It’s fascinating!

She loves to be styled

I love it when I put on my pom-poms. Other great additions are high buns and even faux bangs. Styling her is always an experiment and really exciting. But that’s not the only reason she loves to be styled, because it’s important to protect and maintain by limiting the chance of breakage.

She’s a plant

Well, she’s similar to a plant! Her roots are deep in my scalp, and she grows out like a myriad of leaves, transforming into this amazing and gorgeous bush of joy. Just like a plant, she needs to be watered regularly and nurtured so that she becomes the best form of herself she can be. She also loves to be around other afros, because then she feels at home in mass array of curls and coils.

Do you have an afro or do you just love the afro style? If you do have one tell me why you love it, how you maintain it and the love you’ve got from others about it. If you just simply love the afro style, please tell us all why you marvel at it. Comment below guys.

Best Bars in NYC

If you like to party or simply kick back with a great beer whilst reading the newspaper, then NYC is the place for you. The city has so many great bars to choose from, they are so diverse and varied that there is something for everyone and every taste.

I enjoyed researching for this article, as you can imagine it was fun heading around the big apple and having an obligatory drink in each bar.

Here are the bars that you need to check out when you hit NYC!

169 Bar – Chinatown

Everyone loves a good dive bar, but the 169 Soul Jazz Oyster Bar beats any other kind of dive bar you’ve seen. There are cheap drinks, a leopard print 8-ball table, and some interesting décor – this place is Chinatown staple.

7B – East Village

This bar is also known as the Horseshoe bar because of the shape of the awesome wooden bar. 7B is one of the last remaining relics of the grunge that used to dominate the east village.

ABC Beer Co. – Alphabet City

This is a bar and also a boutique beer shop, it’s a place where the low key beer lovers among us flock to. ABC is known for it’s well chosen 12 beers it has on tap, they regularly rotate so you’ll always have something new to try. They’ve got some great sandwiches and then there’s the mind blowing fridge stacked with beer! There’s free Wi-Fi too!

Angel’s Share – East Village

This Japanese cocktails lounge can be tricky to find, it’s hidden behind an unmarked door right in the back of the Village Yokocho restaurant. The place has been going for 25 years now and it’s popular for it’s extravagant drinks. Try out the cocktail Smoke Gets in Your Eyes if you want something special.

Bar Sixtyfive – Midtown

Even if you live in New York it’s still fun to try out the touristy things now and then. Bar SixtyFive is definitely one of those touristy things! It’s located, as it’s name suggests, on the 65th floor of the famous Rockefeller Center. As you can imagine, the prices are very high indeed, but the food is good, the cocktails great and the view is even better.

Come on New Yorkers, tell me which is your favourite watering hole in our great city. Where’s the best beer, cocktail or wine in NYC?

Kylie Makeup – my opinion

I am sure that you have heard of the make up brand known as Kylie Cosmetics by Kylie Jenner. Kylie Jenner became a global superstar after her family appeared the reality TV programme called ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians.’

At just 19 years old Kylie Jenner’s popularity and fame is amazing for such a young lady. She became if more talked about after she underwent lip surgery – it must be said that she has undergone several surgeries to alter her looks.

For two long years Kylie had spoken of her desire to bring out her own make up brand. It is completely inspired by herself and it’s purpose is to allow everyone to get the Kylie look. Her collection started with lip kits, the kits contained a liquid lipstick and also a matching lip liner.

Obviously this collection is going to be popular due to who created it, I tried it recently and I was quite impressed. When you first but the kit the first thing you will notice is how good the packaging is. Her fans love it because it has an image of Kylie’s lips, they are dripping in color and she is sporting silver/gold teeth also.

The lip kits are really good. The one thing I will tell you all is that you need a bit of practice to be able to get the true Kylie look! I personally do not usually use lip liner, so there was a lot of trial and error. If you don’t have a steady hand then ask a friend to help you out because it can be a little tricky to remove. Once you have got the lipstick on it will last all night, even if you eat or drink it won’t rub off.

One other thing you should try out is the crème eye shadow, I would most definitely choose it over the lip kits. I didn’t think that I would love it as much as I do but I really can’t get enough of it! Other crème eye shadow will slowly fade as the night goes on, but Kylie’s eye shadow stays on all night and never creases.

Would I recommend Kylie’s collection? Yes, I would say that everyone would try it. It is not the cheapest make up out there because of its creator. If you are on a budget then I’d advise looking for other options.

Winter Fashion 2017 – What to Know

When the top brands showcased their winter collections at the NYC Fashion Week it was clear to see that they were very into burgundy, loved a spot of velvet, brought the jumpsuit silhouette in abundance and the wide leg trousers are certainly back in fashion.

Add all of those things together and you will see that the winter collections for 2017 are going to be extremely feminine and romantic. Here’s what you need to know for 2017:

A huge array of burgundy (and it’s close cousin, maroon) was on show when the catwalk was graced with this year’s collections – Tadashi Soji, Bibhu Mohapatra and Public School, were the designers that really pushed burgundy this year.

It seemed that everyone had fallen in love with velvet this year. Check out Christian Siriano’s winter collection if you’re looking for some of the best designs out there – his floor length gown that hugged the body was truly amazing and then his cocktail dress that bares the shoulders is a must for every party.

The Wide-Leg Look

It is true that the wide-leg trouser certainly isn’t something new for a winter collection, but in 2017 it appears that the trend has gained a lot more popularity. Marc Jacobs collection this year is loving the wide leg look, his models were wearing a collection with a hip-hop influence. They wore dresses that would end mid-thigh or scraping the floor, then there was my favourite ultra-roomy tracksuit pant style trouser.

The jumpsuit silhouette is something that we’re going to be seeing a lot of this year. The models kept coming down the catwalk in the one piece. This year it seems that the designers have upped their game style-wise. Jumpsuits have become so popular that now you will even find them in Ralph Lauren’s winter collection. Head to the Madison Ave. flagship store and pick up a gorgeous stretchy back zip jumpsuit.

Khan is one of a number of designers that really went deep into the embroidery department this winter collection. The designers have really embellished their collections with jewels and studs.

No matter what style you prefer, you can be assured that there are plenty of pieces out there this winter collection that you’ll fall in love with. Remember, ladies, take some chances, be confident and show off this winter!
